How did you get started? I started playing violin when I was 3½, taking group classes at a public school. I began piano lessons a few years later.

What do you do when you’re not playing with ROCO? I’m concertmaster of Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, violinist with the Montreal Contemporary Ensemble, I’m involved in many chamber music projects, and I teach a few students.

Question you’re asked most often: Do you practice every day? Answer: Well, I do. I take a day off here and there, but I try to practice a few hours every day.

Interests outside music: Cooking, yoga, travel, James Bond movies.

Bio: Canadian violinist Véronique Mathieu has performed as soloist and chamber musician in Austria, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Denmark, France, Switzerland, and the United States. She is currently Concertmaster of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, and regularly performs with the Montreal Contemporary Ensemble. Ms. Mathieu broadcast recitals for the Canadian Broadcasting Company, Radio-Canada, the Classical Radio in Costa Rica, and the Radio Suisse-Romande. She was recently invited to perform and teach master classes in Costa Rica for the series Promising Artists of the 21st Century. Véronique is a winner of the 2009 Canada Council Bank of Instruments Competition and the 2009 Competition in the Performance of Music from Spain and Latin America.

An avid contemporary music performer, Véronique has premiered many works by American and Canadian composers, and recorded for the CD series New Music at Indiana University, and the label of Radio-Canada. Recent performances include solo appearances with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Oakville Symphony Orchestra, the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, and the Orchestra of San José do Rio Prato.

Véronique holds degrees from the Conservatoire de Musique de Québec, McGill University, and Indiana University. She is currently completing her Doctorate in violin performance under the guidance of Mark Kaplan at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where she previously earned a Master’s degree and a Performer Diploma as a student of Miriam Fried.
