Brian Lewis
Brian Lewis, Concertmaster

Instrument: Violin

Originally from: Ottawa, KS

Now reside in: Austin, TX

Age: Old enough to know better, but still young enough to do it!

Birthday: April 17

How did you get started? I come from a family of musicians, mostly violinists. I officially began studying at the age of 4 and performed my first recital at the age of 5.

What do you do when you’re not playing with ROCO? Professor of Violin at The University of Texas at Austin and Visiting Professor at the Yale School of Music in addition to an active performance and teaching career around the world. I also watch NCIS as often as I can, and I enjoy collecting violin memorabilia.

What did you do this summer? I performed and taught at several music festivals, including: Sound Encounters, the Ottawa Suzuki Institute, and the Brian Lewis Young Artist Program (Ottawa, KS), Annie Moses Band Fine Arts Summer Academy (Nashville, TN), Talent Education Research Institute Summer School (Matsumoto, Japan), and 72-Hours of Music (Chateau Ainay-le-Vieil, France). I also enjoyed a family vacation to Michigan's upper peninsula.

Personal info: Single, with a serious commitment to an orchid plant at home

Question you're asked most often: How long do you practice?? Answer: Five hours daily.

Interests outside music: I collect old 78's to play on my Victrola. I also constantly keep a journal as I love to write. I am also restoring a house in Kansas built in the 1870's.
