Dorothy Gates makes her ROCO debut this season with the commission and world premiere performance of her “Trombone Concerto.” The commission is sponsored by The Wortham Foundation and performed by ROCO Principal Trombone, Thomas Hultén.
Dorothy Gates received her Bachelor of Music degree in composition and trombone performance from Queens University Belfast, where she won a scholarship to attend the University of Michigan in 1988. It was there she received her Master of Music degree in Trombone performance. She went on to receive her PhD in Composition from the University of Salford. As a composer, many of her works have been published and recorded. As a member of the jazz ensemble Spiritual to the Bone, Dorothy has performed in Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Great Britain, and throughout the US.
Dorothy has served as the Music Editor for The Salvation Army’s Eastern Territory in New York and Composer in Residence for the New York Staff Band since 2002. She is the first woman Composer/Editor to be employed by The Salvation Army in this role. In addition she is the Chorus Director for the New York Staff Band Chorus. Dorothy, her husband Mark, and beagle Dougal live in Warwick, NY.
